UK and US accelerate nuclear submarine production plans
The United Kingdom and the United States are implementing major industrial strategies to accelerate the production of nuclear-powered submarines.
In Britain, the government has announced a £6 billion industrial plan to double nuclear submarine construction rates. The goal is to produce one SSN-AUKUS attack submarine every 18 months. Investment will target BAE Systems’ shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness and Rolls-Royce Submarines’ Raynesway reactor facility to expand shipbuilding, reactor manufacturing, and supply-chain capacity. This expansion aims to support the SSN-AUKUS program alongside the Dreadnought-class ballistic-missile submarine fleet.
Simultaneously, the US Navy is targeting a production rate of three submarines per year by 2031. This strategy, outlined by Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, aims to deliver two Virginia-class attack submarines and one Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine annually. The Columbia-class program, intended to replace the Ohio class, expects its lead vessel to enter service in 2031, with a goal of reaching one Columbia-class vessel per year by 2030.
