UK and US States Legalize Plug‑In Balcony Solar for Renters

In late July 2025 the United Kingdom passed legislation that legalises plug‑in balcony solar panels for renters, allowing sales to begin on 27 August. The new rules let flat‑dwelling tenants install compact photovoltaic units on balconies or terraces and connect them to a standard wall socket, providing a simple way to reduce electricity bills without roof modifications. Major retailers such as Currys, B&Q, Asda, Screwfix, Wickes and Amazon have prepared sales guidelines for the upcoming market.

In the United States, Utah became the first state to legalise the technology, and a further nine states have now adopted similar legislation. Lawmakers see the measures as a way to broaden clean‑energy access for renters and households that cannot install traditional rooftop systems. While the technology is already widespread in Germany and Spain, manufacturers must adapt the panels to meet U.S. electrical standards. Both regions view plug‑in solar as a low‑cost, low‑maintenance option to help meet rising energy costs and climate goals.
