UK announces £130m investment in zero-emission vehicle technology
The United Kingdom has announced a £130 million investment in next-generation zero-emission vehicle technology, combining nearly £65 million in government funding with matching industry capital. This initiative is part of the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy and is delivered through DRIVE35, a £4 billion programme aimed at accelerating the electrification of the UK automotive sector through 2035.
The funding is expected to support over 1,800 high-value manufacturing jobs and thousands more throughout the supply chain, particularly benefiting regions like the North East and West Midlands. Specific allocations include approximately £50 million for automotive companies and R&D partners to commercialize zero-emission technologies, and £17 million for nine projects under the Connected and Automated Mobility Pathfinder programme, focusing on sensors, AI simulation, and automated systems.
Industry Minister Blair McDougall stated the goal is to ensure the next generation of vehicles is designed and manufactured in Britain. Supported companies include Bentley Motors and Turntide Technologies. This investment aligns with the UK's broader transition plan, which aims to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and mandate all new vehicles be zero-emission by 2035.
