UK Antarctic Heritage Trust recruits staff for Antarctica mission

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) is recruiting a small team for a five-to-six-month mission at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island, Antarctica. The roles offer monthly salaries ranging from 1,700 to 2,500 euros, with accommodation, meals, and necessary extreme-weather equipment provided.

Key responsibilities include monitoring the local Gentoo penguin colony, which consists of approximately 1,000 birds, to track reproductive success and the impact of tourism. Staff will also perform maintenance on the historic 80-year-old facilities to combat environmental changes such as increased rainfall and snow accumulation.

Additionally, the team will manage visitor services at the site, which includes operating the world’s southernmost post office, a museum, and a souvenir shop for tourists arriving via cruise ships. This mission is part of a three-year program to preserve the historic base, which was originally established as a British military station in 1944.
