UK Antarctic Heritage Trust recruits staff for Port Lockroy
The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) has announced the team for the 2026–2027 season at Port Lockroy, located on Goudier Island in the Antarctic Peninsula. The mission involves a diverse group of professionals, including an ex-Royal Air Force officer, a mountain rescue volunteer, and a British Museum professional tasked with monitoring penguin populations.
Staff members are responsible for a variety of duties, including managing the Penguin Post Office—the southernmost post office in the world—handling museum operations, welcoming tourists, and conducting scientific monitoring. The role requires living in remote conditions for five months, where traditional amenities like running water are unavailable.
The selected team consists of 14 individuals: eight operators will manage the Port Lockroy site, while six researchers will travel further south to study the conservation status of the Wordie House research station. The foundation provides food, accommodation, and essential polar clothing as part of the contract.
