UK approves disease-resistant precision-bred Maris Piper potato

The United Kingdom has approved the marketing of PiperPlus, a precision-bred Maris Piper potato designed to resist late blight and two significant viruses: Potato Virus Y (PVY) and Potato Leafroll Virus (PLRV). Developed by the Jonathan Jones Group at The Sainsbury Laboratory, the variety met the legal definition of a Precision Bred Organism (PBO) under the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act 2023.

This development addresses critical challenges in potato production, where late blight often requires growers to apply up to 15 fungicide sprays per season. The use of resistant varieties could significantly reduce fungicide and insecticide reliance, leading to lower carbon emissions, reduced labor, and less soil compaction. Following Defra's confirmation, the product must now undergo safety and compositional assessment by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The approval comes amid a broader industry shift toward enhanced disease surveillance. As pathogens evolve and develop resistance to traditional fungicides, experts emphasize that identifying biological threats through precise monitoring of pathogen populations is becoming essential for modern crop protection strategies.
