UK Army Chief warns citizens of potential sacrifices for national defence

General Sir Roly Walker, the Chief of the General Staff, has warned that British citizens may need to make sacrifices to strengthen national defence in response to escalating global security threats. Speaking to approximately 700 soldiers at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, Walker stated that politicians will soon begin a “frank conversation” with the public regarding the risks facing the country.

Walker emphasized that the UK could face a situation where military engagement is necessary, noting that the burden of land combat often falls on the youngest and least experienced soldiers. He stressed the importance of public consent and support for the military's role in the face of geopolitical jeopardy, particularly concerning Russia and potential NATO-related confrontations.

These remarks coincide with political pressure to address a £5bn shortfall in planned defence spending. In a related effort to bolster national resilience, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has urged households to prepare for potential emergencies by maintaining basic supplies such as bottled water, tinned food, and cash.
