UK authorities disrupt drug smuggling and production operations
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has secured convictions against five members of a gang that attempted to smuggle £13.8 million worth of cannabis into the United Kingdom. The group was intercepted at Birmingham Airport in August 2024 after traveling from Thailand via Paris. The smuggling attempt was inadvertently flagged when members of the gang paid excess baggage fees in Bangkok due to the weight of the drugs, which were vacuum-packed and hidden under clothing in 22 suitcases.
In a separate operation, four men—Kenneth Burton, Paul Harkness Mawby, Anthony Devine, and Mohammed Khan—have been charged with conspiracy to produce methamphetamine. The suspects are alleged to have operated a laboratory in an isolated rural area near Furnace End, Warwickshire. This investigation is linked to a broader case involving five Mexican citizens accused of similar activities. The operation involved collaboration between the NCA, Cleveland Police, West Midlands Police, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
