UK authorities seize 1.4 million GBP from Cristian Boureanu

British authorities have confiscated approximately 1.4 million GBP from former Romanian deputy Cristian Boureanu. The seizure was executed by the Crown Prosecution Service following a request from the Romanian Ministry of Justice to enforce a court ruling.

The funds are part of a larger 2.1 million euro prejudice ordered by the High Court of Cassation and Justice in relation to a corruption case involving the Bucharest-Constanța railway rehabilitation project. While Boureanu's prison sentence for influence peddling was not executed due to the statute of limitations, the obligation to pay the damages remained final.

Romanian judicial authorities utilized the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom to facilitate the recovery. Boureanu has characterized the measure as abusive, arguing that he has not received a definitive prison sentence in this specific case.
