Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover announce major restructuring and job cuts

Major automotive manufacturers are undergoing significant restructuring amid intense global competition and shifting technologies.

Volkswagen Group is implementing a massive restructuring plan estimated to cost up to 16 billion euros. This includes potential job cuts of up to 100,000 positions globally and the possible phased reduction of production at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm. The company is also exploring a pivot toward defense technology, with plans to transform its Osnabrück plant into a security and defense center to offset declining vehicle production.

In the United Kingdom, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced plans to cut approximately 4,000 jobs over the next two years, primarily affecting management and administrative roles. The company aims to save £1.7 billion to combat rising costs and competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

In contrast to these layoffs, McLaren has announced a £450 million investment in its Woking technology center, which is expected to create 1,000 new jobs as part of a broader effort to revive the supercar manufacturer under new ownership.
