UK automotive market faces pressure on nearly-new vehicle values

The United Kingdom automotive market is facing potential pressure on nearly-new vehicle residual values due to an increasing supply of young vehicles. This influx includes pre-registered cars, dealer demonstrators, fleet returns, and vehicles from short-term leasing agreements.

An analysis by Cox Automotive for Q2 2026 indicates that rising volumes of these vehicles are entering both retail and wholesale channels. This trend is significant for the leasing industry, as residual values are critical to the financial calculations used by leasing companies and funders to estimate future vehicle worth.

Data from SMMT regarding August 2026 pre-registrations highlights specific manufacturer activity. Notably, MG recorded 553 pre-registered vehicles, generating approximately £12.9 million in gross revenue. Other manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda, also reported pre-registration volumes during this period.
