UK Autumn Budget draws mixed industry reactions
The UK Autumn Budget has received varied responses from the food, farming, retail, and hospitality sectors. The National Farmers Union (NFU) and the British Retail Consortium (BRC) criticized the measures, stating they offer “no breathing space” for food production and failing to address the cash flow crisis or farm inheritance tax reforms.
While the NFU welcomed the extension of the temporary agricultural red diesel duty reduction through July 2027, officials noted that fuel prices remain significantly higher than the previous year. The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) also warned that the budget provides insufficient relief for food price pressures.
In contrast, UKHospitality welcomed the budget as a positive step, specifically noting that business rates for qualifying retail, hospitality, and leisure properties in England will be frozen in real terms, reduced, or cut to zero for two years starting in April. The organization continues to advocate for a VAT reduction to address the sector's high tax burden.
Other key announcements include a rise in the small business rate relief threshold from £12,000 to £18,000 and a 3.9% increase in the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage for 18- to 20-year-olds, effective April 2027. Additionally, the government announced tariff cuts on certain imports, including fertilizers and 100 everyday food items like garlic and gherkins.
