UK banking sector reports higher tax rates than international competitors
The British banking sector is facing higher total tax rates compared to other major international financial hubs, according to a report by UK Finance and PwC. The study found that the sector's effective tax rate reached 46.2% for the fiscal year ending last March, significantly higher than Amsterdam (42.2%), Frankfurt (39.1%), Dublin (29%), and New York (27.9%).
The banking industry, which employs approximately 500,000 people, contributed a total of £47.8 billion in taxes. This includes £25.7 billion in direct taxes on profits and levies, and £22.1 billion collected through employee income tax and social security. This total represents 4.3% of the UK's total tax revenue.
David Postings, Director General of UK Finance, stated that while the sector makes a vital contribution to public finances, the higher tax burden relative to other financial centers is a concern. He advocated for stable taxes and reforms in upcoming budgets to support economic growth and the sector's ability to finance the economy.
