UK banks compete with current account switch incentives

UK retail banks are engaging in intense competition for new customers through current account switch incentives. Barclays recently concluded its £200 switch offer on August 27, which required customers to use the Barclays mobile app, initiate a transfer via the Current Account Switch Service, transfer at least two active direct debits, and deposit £2,000 into the new account.

As Barclays' offer expires, HSBC is providing a higher incentive of £220 for new customers who open an account via its mobile app. To qualify for the HSBC bonus, customers must complete a full switch including at least two direct debits, deposit at least £2,000, and spend at least £500 using an HSBC debit card within 60 days. This offer is unavailable to existing HSBC or First Direct customers.

Other competitors in the market include NatWest, which offers a £200 bonus with less stringent requirements, such as no active direct debits, provided customers deposit £1,250 and log into the mobile app within 60 days. The Co-operative Bank has also participated in the incentive cycle, previously offering up to £300 before transitioning to a structured £200 payout.
