UK bans raw‑milk cheese imports from France and Italy

Britain’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) announced a ban on all imports of cheeses made from unpasteurised milk originating in France and Italy. The move follows the detection of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle – the first Italian case was confirmed in Sardinia on 21 June 2025 and the first French case near Chambéry on 29 June 2025 – prompting the UK to revoke the LSD‑free status of both countries.

The ban also covers live cattle imports. Cheeses produced before 23 May may continue to be imported if proper paperwork is provided, meaning shortages could emerge gradually as aged stock runs out. Defra emphasised there is no risk to human health from consuming cheese made from affected cattle.

All affected cheeses remain available within the EU, but UK consumers will no longer be able to purchase them commercially or bring them back from holidays.
