UK bees face severe stress from record summer heat

Record-breaking temperatures across the United Kingdom this summer have caused widespread bee mortality. Excess heat disrupts bees' ability to regulate hive temperature, hampers foraging and reproduction, and intensifies phenological mismatches where flowering plants and pollinators are out of sync. The decline threatens pollination of crops that depend on bees for up to 75 % of global food production, raising concerns for food security.

Beekeepers have also reported increased “robbing” incidents, where weakened colonies attack neighboring hives in search of honey as natural forage dries up. This aggressive behavior can quickly overwhelm colonies, especially weaker or newly split ones. Experts advise monitoring hive activity, protecting entrances, and ensuring adequate food stores to reduce robbing pressure. Longer‑term measures include expanding floral habitats, reducing pesticide use, and supporting sustainable agriculture to improve bee resilience.
