UK Biobank Study Links Prolonged Sitting to Higher Cancer Risk

Researchers analyzing data from the UK Biobank examined movement patterns of roughly 91,000 participants using wrist‑worn sensors over a week and then followed their health outcomes for about 12 years. The analysis found a statistical association between higher amounts of sitting and an increased incidence of cancer, as well as higher mortality among those who developed cancer.

The authors caution that the observed link does not prove that sitting directly causes cancer, emphasizing that other lifestyle or health factors could explain the relationship. The study has sparked discussion about the health implications of sedentary behavior and the need for further research to clarify causality.
