UK Bluetongue Outbreak Hits Devon Farms

A sharp rise in bluetongue virus (BTV‑3) is sweeping the South West of England, with Devon reporting 64 confirmed cases out of 134 across England and Wales in the 2026‑27 season. Sheep have suffered significant losses; one farmer reported eight deaths on her flock. Warm weather has boosted the biting midge vector, extending its breeding season and heightening transmission risk.

Local authorities are responding. Devon County Council’s farms estate committee convened an urgent meeting, with Councillor Louise Wainwright saying the situation is “causing deep distress to those farmers involved”. The council is reviewing support measures, while Defra continues to fund diagnostic testing for suspected cases. Efforts are under way to fast‑track additional BTV vaccines and explore eco‑friendly controls such as the fungus Metarhizium, which can kill adult midges. Movement between England and Wales remains unrestricted under existing bluetongue restricted zones, but testing and vaccination guidance are being intensified.

Sheep owner Alisha Russ from the Forest of Dean highlighted the difficulty of obtaining small‑scale vaccine doses, underscoring the need for coordinated action to protect livestock and livelihoods.
