UK border security under review after undetected Kent landings

The United Kingdom is facing increased scrutiny over border security following several undetected small boat landings on the Kent coast. Two vessels reached the shores near Folkestone and Dover this week without being intercepted by patrol boats, an occurrence Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described as “not acceptable.”

In response to these incidents, the Border Security Command has been ordered to conduct an urgent review. Experts and the Immigration Service Union have raised concerns that current monitoring efforts contain “gaps” that allow smugglers to evade detection. There are suggestions that the official record of undetected crossings may be an undercount, as smuggling gangs shift their routes away from the traditional Calais-to-Dover stretch toward the South Coast.

While some traffickers utilize large vessels, others are reportedly using smaller boats of approximately 20 people to avoid detection. There are also ongoing discussions regarding the potential need for increased funding to expand patrols along the French coastline to counter these shifting tactics.
