UK businesses and London implement strategies to combat extreme heat

UK businesses are increasingly adapting operations to manage extreme heat. According to the Q2 Barclays Business Prosperity Index, 60% of UK firms have reported taking steps to counter rising summer temperatures. This includes 37% boosting investment in cooling equipment and HVAC systems, while 23% are assessing their options. Other measures include implementing energy efficiency policies, offering additional staff breaks, and providing flexible or remote working options.

In London, the C40 Cities Group, in partnership with the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority, has released the Cooling Roadmap for London (CRL). The report aims to address the urban heat island effect and the risks posed by poorly insulated buildings. The roadmap proposes reducing energy demand by 4% by 2030 and 15% by 2050 through sustainable, efficient, and equitable cooling (SEC) measures. The plan prioritizes social housing, social care, and healthcare sectors to protect heat-vulnerable populations and mitigate cooling poverty.
