UK businesses encourage cash payments, research shows
Research commissioned by the ATM and cash access network Link reveals that 54% of consumers in the UK reported being encouraged to pay in cash by businesses during an eight-week period ending in September. This encouragement manifested through signage indicating a preference for cash or direct requests from staff.
Common sectors requesting cash included cafes, restaurants, independent shops, hairdressers, beauty salons, outdoor markets, pubs, and supermarkets. Of those prompted to use cash, 75% completed their transactions using physical banknotes or coins.
Regional data shows that consumers in Northern Ireland were most frequently encouraged to pay in cash (69%) and were also the most likely to comply (88%). High rates of compliance were also noted in Scotland (82%) and Wales (78%). Graham Mott, director of strategy at Link, stated that the findings demonstrate cash remains a practical choice for millions and highlights the ongoing importance of a resilient ATM network.
