UK campaigners oppose major housing developments in Devon and Surrey
Community campaigners in the United Kingdom are organizing to oppose two separate large-scale housing developments.
In East Devon, opponents of the Exmo_20 housing plan are preparing to hold a public meeting to address concerns regarding land allocation at St John’s, near Exmouth. While the site initially failed a housing and economic land availability assessment due to access issues, East Devon District Council is exploring alternative access via the B3179. Campaigners have raised concerns about the environmental impact of a proposed 400-metre road near the Pebblebed Heaths.
In Surrey, a campaign has launched against a proposal by Cater Properties to build 507 homes, a care home, and a medical centre on part of the Sunbury Golf Course in Shepperton. The developer argues the site qualifies as ‘grey belt’ land and addresses local housing needs. However, local campaigners are urging residents to submit formal objections to Spelthorne Borough Council, citing risks related to flooding, wildlife protection, and the site’s history as a former landfill.
