UK can re‑enter EU, says former negotiator Barnier – conditions outlined

Former EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier told Euronews that the United Kingdom may decide to re‑join the European Union, but Brussels has set clear conditions. He said the door is open but the UK cannot have “everything without concessions”, stressing that any return would require respect for the four fundamental freedoms – free movement of goods, services, people and capital. Barnier suggested that the UK could potentially join the EU single market without full membership, similar to arrangements with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, though full membership remains off the table.

Barnier noted that a rapid re‑entry could be possible if the UK aligns its regulations with EU standards, avoiding major divergences in areas such as food safety and security. The comments come ten years after the 2016 Brexit referendum, which now appears to be viewed by a majority of the British public as a mistake.
