UK, Canada, and Australia condemn Israel over WCK investigation decision
The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have issued a joint condemnation of Israel following the decision by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) not to pursue criminal investigations into the 2024 strikes on a World Central Kitchen (WCK) convoy in Gaza. The three nations described the decision as ‘shameful’ and emphasized that the victims and their families deserve justice and accountability.
The incident, which occurred on April 1, 2024, resulted in the deaths of seven humanitarian workers, including citizens from the UK, Australia, Poland, Palestine, and a dual American-Canadian national. An IDF investigation concluded that the strike was a mistake caused by an erroneous assessment that Hamas terrorists had taken control of the convoy. The military reported that troops incorrectly identified individuals as armed and believed the vehicles were using an uncoordinated route.
The three governments stated they have spent significant time pressing Israel for a thorough investigation. They called on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and to improve safety measures for humanitarian operations in Gaza.
