UK car buyers weigh electric and hybrid options ahead of 2030 deadline

Research from Cazoo’s Consumer Insight Panel indicates that the UK’s planned phase-out of petrol and diesel vehicles is significantly influencing consumer behavior. According to the survey of 2,025 buyers, 37% of respondents say the upcoming restrictions will encourage them to purchase an electric vehicle (EV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or hybrid. Conversely, 28% of respondents intend to buy a new internal combustion engine vehicle before they are phased out of the market.

The UK government’s current roadmap mandates that sales of new petrol and diesel cars end by 2030, with all new cars and vans required to be zero-emission by 2035. As the market shifts, experts are warning of fiscal and structural challenges.

T&E has reported that the transition poses a significant risk to public service funding, estimating that the Treasury could lose £50 billion in fuel duty and £8 billion in first-year Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) by 2035. Additionally, critics argue the current taxation system lacks sufficient incentives for electrification, noting that petrol car buyers may pay roughly £1,000 less in upfront taxes over a decade compared to EV buyers.
