UK car sales reach 27-year August high driven by electric vehicle growth

New car registrations in the United Kingdom reached 94,236 in August, marking the highest August performance since the current number plate system began in 1999. This represents a 13.7 per cent increase compared to August 2025.

Electrified vehicles drove much of this growth. Fully electric car sales rose 27.7 per cent, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of the market. Plug-in hybrids also saw significant growth, increasing by 39.8 per cent year-on-year. The rise in electric vehicle demand includes increased interest in Chinese-built models.

In the light commercial vehicle sector, registrations rose 0.6 per cent to 14,445 units. Electric van market share reached a record high of 16.3 per cent, though it remains below mandated targets. Conversely, pickup registrations fell by 61.2 per cent, continuing an 11-month decline attributed to previous tax changes.

The surge in sales occurs as the UK government considers proposals to relax electric vehicle sales targets between 2027 and 2030. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has advocated for these changes, citing unsustainable discounting and the financial burden of missing Zero Emission Vehicle mandates.
