UK Chancellor announces defence-led industrialisation drive
British Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey has announced a new industrialisation drive centered on defence contracts to stimulate economic growth and national security. As part of this strategy, the UK government will award a UK-only tender for the construction of three new floating docks at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland. This project, known as Programme Euston, is designed to provide essential out-of-water engineering, inspections, and repairs for the Royal Navy’s current and future nuclear submarine fleet.
The Treasury stated that these projects, which include the submarine docks and at least £115 million for a new marine research vessel, are worth billions of pounds in combination. By restricting the tender to British companies, the government aims to bolster sovereign industrial capability and secure jobs across the country.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s broader pledge to reindustrialise the United Kingdom. The government also intends to meet NATO targets by increasing the core defence budget to 3.5 per cent of GDP by 2035, using strategic investments in sectors like shipbuilding to reduce unemployment and drive long-term economic resilience.
