UK Chancellor faces pressure over proposed bank tax hikes

Chancellor John Healey is facing conflicting pressures ahead of Wednesday's Budget regarding potential tax increases on major banks. Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra has called for big banks to “do their bit” by paying more, noting that the financial services sector generated approximately £15 billion in profits during the first half of the year. Marra suggested that windfall profits driven by mortgage rates outstripping base rates could fund public services like the NHS.

Conversely, the Conservative Party and former cost-of-living tsar Richard Walker have warned that taxing the banking sector could backfire. Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith argued that higher taxes on banks would likely lead to increased mortgage rates for homeowners and businesses.

Adding to the political tension, the Treasury's entrepreneurship tsar, Alex Depledge, announced her resignation this week. She criticized the government for failing to prioritize future-facing businesses, comparing her experience at the Treasury to “organ rejection.”
