UK Chancellor John Healey prepares first Budget amid fiscal pressures

Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey is set to deliver his first Budget next week, facing significant economic and security challenges. The UK government is managing record-high borrowing of £3 trillion and rising inflation, which reached 3.5 percent in the year leading to September, driven largely by increased petrol and diesel costs.

Healey must navigate tight public finances and a 2024 manifesto commitment that prohibits significant tax rises, while attempting to support small businesses and living costs. There is also intense pressure regarding national security; critics are calling for a commitment to increase defence spending to 3 percent of GDP by 2030 to address threats from Russia and maintain NATO standards.

Investors and bond markets remain a primary concern for the Chancellor as the UK competes globally for capital amidst concerns over deficits and high demand for technology-driven investment.
