UK Chancellor summons bank chiefs ahead of Autumn Budget

Ahead of the UK Autumn Budget, Chancellor John Healey has summoned the leaders of major banks, including Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays, HSBC, and NatWest Group, for an in-person meeting. The summons comes amid industry warnings against potential tax increases on lenders. While groups like the Trades Union Congress (TUC) have called for raising the bank profits surcharge from 3% to at least 8% to support cost-of-living initiatives, industry leaders argue that higher taxes could undermine the UK’s status as a global financial hub and drive investment abroad.

In a separate submission regarding the budget, the Confederation of Small Industries (CIMA) has proposed measures to reduce the tax burden on businesses to encourage hiring and investment. Key recommendations include lowering Employer National Insurance rates, increasing secondary thresholds, and establishing a permanent UK Productivity Commission to address regional economic disparities. CIMA emphasized the need for a coherent regional growth framework and simplified tax administration for small and medium-sized enterprises.
