UK cinemas implement bans on Meta smart glasses over privacy concerns
UK cinemas are increasingly implementing bans or restrictions on the use of Meta smart glasses due to concerns regarding privacy and film piracy. The UK Cinema Association (UKCA) noted that while these wearable devices offer accessibility benefits for individuals with specific needs, many operators are introducing policies to prohibit or limit camera-enabled smart glasses to prevent unauthorized recording.
Similar restrictions have already been adopted by other sectors, including theaters and pub chains such as Wetherspoons. Meta, which produces smart glasses through partnerships with Ray-Ban and Oakley, defended the technology, stating that the devices provide essential functions like live translation and hands-free calls, as well as critical support for the blind and low-vision community. The company acknowledged that filming without permission is inappropriate but argued that rules should be applied consistently.
