UK communities protest local land-use and development plans
Local communities in two parts of the United Kingdom are protesting proposed land-use changes. In Sidmouth, residents living near the Sensory Garden have expressed ongoing concerns regarding the Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub’s plan to repurpose the former Macerator Building. Opponents argue the project could lead to increased noise, higher footfall, and parking issues, potentially compromising the garden’s purpose as a quiet, reflective space. Residents described a recent information meeting as a “show and tell” rather than a genuine consultation.
In South London, campaigners are making a final plea to Richmond Council to halt the conversion of the Shacklegate Lane allotments into an extension of Teddington Cemetery. Scheduled for closure on October 1, the move aims to provide 700 new burial spaces to address a local shortage. Residents argue the destruction of the 120-year-old allotments is a short-term fix and have urged the council to implement long-term sustainable strategies, such as grave reclamation schemes, instead of seizing the allotment land.
