UK Competition and Markets Authority issues final orders for veterinary services

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published its Final Orders following a multi-year investigation into UK veterinary services for household pets. Effective as of September 22, 2026, these legally binding remedies aim to increase transparency, improve choice for pet owners, and strengthen competition within the sector.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) noted that most practices are already complying with requirements regarding written prescriptions, handling complaints, and providing estimates for routine procedures. The BVA has called for the government to progress its White Paper to reform the Veterinary Surgeons Act and introduce regulation for veterinary businesses.

The British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) also expressed support for improved client transparency. The BVNA noted that the CMA adapted certain approaches, such as the wording on client-facing materials, following professional input. Veterinary professionals will navigate the implementation of these measures throughout 2027.
