UK construction firms expand apprenticeship programs to address skills gap

Construction firms and educational institutions in the United Kingdom are implementing various strategies to address industry-wide skills shortages through apprenticeship programs.

In Devon, Dale Chadwick Carpentry & Construction Ltd has maintained a 100% retention rate for its apprentices. Director Dale Chadwick emphasized that the company views apprenticeships as an investment in skilled labor rather than a source of low-cost workers, providing fair living wages, tools, and travel support. He noted that the sector faces a significant skills gap as traditional multi-generational building families decline and academic systems prioritize university education.

In the North East, a partnership between Derwentside College and Hewitson Limited has resulted in 12 new groundworker apprenticeships. Following a bespoke recruitment campaign managed by the college, Hewitson Limited increased its initial vacancy count by 50 per cent due to the high quality of applicants. The recruits will work toward Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeships to help build a future talent pipeline for the company.
