UK Conversion Practices Bill faces criticism over potential impact on parents
A report by the think tank Policy Exchange has criticized the UK government’s draft Conversion Practices Bill, describing the proposed legislation as “ideological, authoritarian and unworkable.” The bill aims to outlaw abusive attempts to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, with offenders potentially facing up to five years in prison.
Legal experts and campaigners, including barrister Akua Reindorf KC and Baroness Kishwer Falkner, warn that the vague drafting of the bill could criminalize parents who attempt to dissuade their children from gender transitioning. The report suggests the law might catch parents acting out of genuine concern, such as those refusing to finance gender reassignment or attempting to intervene in a child's transition process.
Critics argue the legislation lacks sufficient protections for religious advisers, counselors, and families, potentially leading to the criminalization of ordinary conversations or religious guidance. While the government maintains the bill is intended to target abusive conduct, opponents suggest it could effectively legislate gender self-identification into UK law.
