UK councils expand support and funding for rough sleepers
Local authorities in the United Kingdom are expanding initiatives to combat rough sleeping. Somerset Council has secured £5.87 million in funding from the Government’s new Rough Sleeping Programme, a three-year initiative from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The funds will be distributed between 2026 and 2029 to provide safe, settled accommodation and support services, including female-only housing and assistance for individuals with complex needs.
In Mansfield, the Mansfield District Council has extended its homelessness support by launching a dedicated team for its Housing First project. The council has taken full ownership of the project, which utilizes a repurposed block of flats to provide intensive, person-centered support. This initiative aims to help individuals with histories of homelessness sustain tenancies and reintegrate into the community through tailored assistance.
