UK councils face opposition to new scout headquarters and apartment projects
In Stratford, the 1st Stratford Scout group has submitted a £1 million plan to replace its single‑storey hut with a two‑storey headquarters on New Broad Street. The proposal, which includes offices, storage, halls and a kitchen, has drawn 52 letters of objection from neighbours and local councillors, who cite concerns over size, parking, traffic and impact on the conservation area. Stratford District Council planners say recent design changes reduce the impact, but the decision on the application is still pending.
In Hucknall, developer Saific Terra Ltd has applied to Ashfield District Council to build a three‑storey block of 16 one‑bedroom affordable apartments on the former Chequers Inn site. The scheme retains the existing car‑park access, provides six parking spaces and uses a red‑brick façade intended to echo nearby Victorian terraces. Council officials have yet to rule on the proposal.
