UK councils face resident petitions over average speed camera plans

Residents of Godalming in Surrey have launched a petition urging Surrey County Council to install average speed cameras on Portsmouth Road, citing daily dangerous speeding. The petition, signed by 44 locals, asks for a speed‑monitoring zone from the Tesco Express to the junction with Eashing Lane. Surrey County Council said it will consider the request and noted that it is already rolling out additional average speed cameras elsewhere in the county.

In Cornwall, the A3083 Culdrose Road Campaign, backed by nearly 2,000 petition signatures, is calling for a pause on a proposed four‑camera average speed system on the A3083 near Helston. Although the council dropped a planned speed‑limit reduction, it intends to proceed with the £250,000 camera scheme despite a majority of consultation respondents objecting. Council documents reveal funding was approved before public consultation and that the scheme’s cost‑benefit analysis was not provided. Campaign spokesperson Dennis Lucan said the council is pushing ahead without sufficient evidence of need.
