UK councils pause major property sales in Middlesbrough and Stockport
Middlesbrough Council has removed the £450,000 Grade II‑listed Exchange House from its auction process, citing renewed interest and a review of options for the building and the adjoining Wood Street car park. The council, which first voted to dispose of the property in December 2022, said the decision aims to secure a better future use and financial return.
Separately, Stockport Council has sold the freehold of the Stockport Sports Village to Stockport County Education Pathway Limited, a company linked to the local football club. The deal, announced after a 2022 purchase, will see the Life Leisure gym on the site close in December 2026, prompting concerns from residents that the loss of the facility could harm community health and cohesion.
