UK councils trial new methods for pothole repairs

Local councils in the United Kingdom are implementing different strategies to address road and path maintenance.

Monmouthshire County Council has announced investments in new machinery, including a Bobcat Skid Steer, and more durable repair materials designed for wet and cold weather to reduce the need for repeat repairs. The council is also creating two new highways inspector positions and improving its online reporting portal to better manage the rising number of reported potholes.

In Kent, Maidstone Borough Council has launched a small-scale trial using a repair material made partly from recycled clothing. The experimental product, developed by Recool and installed by Loughman, was used to repair five potholes in Mote Park and Penenden Heath. The trial aims to test whether repurposing textile waste can provide a lower-carbon alternative to traditional resurfacing methods and support a circular economy.
