UK councils urge residents to improve recycling during Recycle Week

Local councils in Uttlesford and North Ayrshire are participating in Recycle Week, urging residents to improve their recycling habits to reduce waste and prevent contamination.

In Uttlesford, officials are encouraging households to recycle just one additional item per week, such as toothpaste tubes, aerosol cans, or yogurt pots. The council has provided guidance on rinsing containers, flattening cardboard, and avoiding ‘wishcycling’—the practice of placing non-recyclable items in recycling bins. Residents are also warned not to include batteries in household bins due to fire risks.

Similarly, North Ayrshire Council is calling on residents to ensure recyclable materials are not wasted through contamination. Contamination occurs when non-recyclable items are placed in recycling bins or when recyclables are soiled. The council advises rinsing cans, bottles, and food containers to ensure they are suitable for processing and to help support climate change mitigation efforts.
