UK counties Kent, Surrey and Plymouth face deadly air pollution above WHO limits
Air quality data released by the Geographic Data Service show that every neighbourhood in the English counties of Kent, Surrey and Plymouth exceeds World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In Kent, the Stone and Crossways area of Dartford recorded an annual average of more than 17 µg PM2.5 and nearly 23 µg NO2, with 54 % of the county’s neighbourhoods also surpassing NO2 limits. Surrey’s Stanwell South recorded about 15 µg PM2.5 and over 23 µg NO2, while 80 % of Surrey’s neighbourhoods had excess NO2. Plymouth’s most polluted site in Cattedown and Prince Rock measured over 9 µg PM2.5 and roughly 17 µg NO2, and 40 % of the city’s neighbourhoods exceeded NO2 limits. WHO guidelines advise annual averages of no more than 5 µg PM2.5 and 15 µg NO2, limits that are breached across all three counties.
Jonathan Blades, head of policy and public affairs at Asthma + Lung UK, warned that “unsafe levels of air pollution are linked to up to 43,000 deaths across the UK every year” and highlighted the heightened risk for the 12 million people living with lung conditions. He called current UK air‑quality guidelines outdated and urged political action to adopt legally binding targets in line with WHO standards.
