UK courts hand jail terms to men for severe dog cruelty

A Birmingham man, Meekaa'eel Abu-bakar Nawaz, was sentenced to a 16‑week custodial term suspended for 12 months after police and RSPCA inspectors found eight dogs living in filthy, hazardous conditions across two properties. All dogs were underweight and five showed aggression that injured staff. Nawaz pleaded guilty to two animal‑welfare offences, received a ten‑year ban on keeping animals and was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities.

In Nottinghamshire, David Pogmore, who had been barred from keeping animals since 2012, was convicted of causing a pug to suffer a broken leg and head injury. He pleaded guilty to unnecessary suffering and multiple breaches of his animal‑disqualification order. The court sentenced him to two years and two months in prison and imposed an indefinite ban on any future animal care responsibilities.
