UK courts set for teen fire manslaughter trial and infant murder case

In North Shields, Danielle Johnson, 43, her son Louis Casson, 19, and Calvin Smith, 37, have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges over the January 2023 fire that killed 18‑year‑old Leah Casson. The prosecution alleges the fire resulted from unlawful diversion of an electricity meter; the defendants also face counts of abstracting electricity. They were released on bail and the trial is scheduled for October.

In Blackpool, teacher Jamie Varley, 38, and his partner John McGowan‑Fazakerley, 32, are on trial for murder, manslaughter, sexual assault and related offences concerning the death of their 13‑month‑old adopted son, Preston Davey. The prosecution presented medical records, police interviews and phone evidence showing extensive injuries. Varley's defence will be presented on May 21, while both defendants deny any wrongdoing.

Both cases are being heard in English Crown Courts and involve serious charges of unlawful killing and abuse.
