UK cycling infrastructure projects face closures and local criticism

Infrastructure projects in England are facing scrutiny following issues with new cycling routes. In Cambridge, the country’s first ‘cycle street’ on Adams Road has been forced to close shortly after opening. Despite a £2.4 million investment by the Greater Cambridge Partnership, the road requires closure for approximately two weeks to complete necessary road lining and markings that reportedly did not meet required standards.

Simultaneously, a cycle lane project in Woodley, funded by a £3.5 million grant from the Department for Transport, has drawn criticism from local residents. Construction on Woodlands Avenue, intended to connect Woodley town centre to Palmer Park, has been described by neighbors as ‘disastrous’ and a ‘waste of money.’ Residents have raised concerns regarding damaged kerbs, inadequate temporary pedestrian crossings for wheelchair users, and general disruption caused by the works.
