UK dashcam usage rises to 30% of drivers

New research from The AA’s Accident Assist claims service indicates that 30% of drivers in the UK now use dashcams, an increase from 20% in 2018. While dashcams are becoming more common, the majority of owners—71%—have never needed to utilize their recorded footage.

Despite low usage rates among owners, dashcam footage serves as a significant tool for insurance and law enforcement. Approximately 7% of drivers have submitted footage to support insurance claims. Given that the Association of British Insurers reported 2.5 million private motor insurance claims last year, The AA estimates that dashcam evidence could have assisted in roughly 175,000 cases.

Beyond insurance, 5% of drivers have submitted footage to the police to report dangerous driving. In England and Wales, this can be done through Operation Snap, while drivers in Scotland and Northern Ireland use general online reporting forms. Additionally, 3% of drivers have uploaded footage to social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Facebook.
