UK data centres face job shortfalls and power bottlenecks

A report by environmental thinktank Verdant suggests that UK data centres will create only 10,400 permanent jobs by 2035, significantly lower than the 40,000 jobs previously forecast by the trade body techUK.

Verdant argues that the higher figure was based on an extrapolation of older data that failed to account for the industry shift toward larger gigafactories. The thinktank also disputes current employment figures, claiming existing facilities support approximately 4,400 permanent positions rather than the 24,300 cited by techUK.

Additionally, a report from Burges Salmon, featuring contributions from entities such as CoreWeave and NTT Global Data Centers, warns that the expansion of data centres in Britain may be hindered by energy availability and power bottlenecks.
