UK debt interest costs exceed £206bn amid rising gilt yields

Debt interest costs for the UK Labour government have exceeded £206.4 billion since the party took office in July 2024. Rising gilt yields have significantly increased the cost of servicing the national debt, which is approaching the £3 trillion mark. In August alone, the Chancellor faced a debt interest bill of £8.8 billion.

Analysis indicates that 30-year gilt yields rose from approximately 4.5% to a peak of 5.7% in September 2025, marking their highest level since 1998. This surge in borrowing costs, combined with inflation, has placed structural pressure on public finances, with interest payments now accounting for nearly a tenth of total annual government spending.

Beyond solvency concerns, the scale of these payments raises questions regarding wealth distribution. Because interest payments flow to owners of government bonds, pension funds, and financial institutions, critics argue that high interest costs may exacerbate wealth inequality by transferring large sums to asset owners while public spending on services like health and education remains constrained.
