UK Defence Secretary rejects Argentine claims to Falkland Islands
British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has asserted that Argentina lacks the military capability to seize the Falkland Islands, stating that the United Kingdom is fully prepared to defend the archipelago. Streeting dismissed recent claims by Argentine President Javier Milei as a recycling of long-standing disputes that were settled during the 1982 war.
President Milei recently addressed the United Nations General Assembly, characterizing the islands as a national cause for Argentina and invoking a 1976 UN resolution. The tension has escalated following Milei’s announcement of sanctions against companies operating in the Sea Lion oil field and plans to fund a naval base in Tierra del Fuego. Additionally, the Argentine government is advancing a security bill to increase penalties for firms extracting resources near the islands without Argentine authorization.
