UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting threatens to quit over spending shortfall
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said he would not have taken the post without a clear pledge of increased funding, and has warned he will resign if the Labour government fails to meet its defence‑spending targets. He cited a commitment to raise defence spending to 3 % of GDP by 2030 and on a path to 3.5 % by 2035, in line with NATO obligations.
Former Defence Secretary John Healey resigned in June after accusing the Treasury of being unwilling to allocate the resources needed for national security. Healey, now Chancellor of the Exchequer, had demanded the 3 % target and a clear timetable, and his departure highlighted internal pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration.
Andy Burnham has publicly pledged support for the funding increase, while the boss of BAE Systems warned that the UK faces the most threatening security environment in recent memory. The government has yet to set a timetable for reaching the 3 % goal.
